I am often asked about the destinations in my capacity as the UK Director of Operations for One World Tours Limited.

I have been to. I try to offer some helpful advice and give a good opinion on those places. Here then, are my top suggestions for sites to take in during your holiday in Laos.

The Pak Ou Caves are an absolutely spectacular sight to behold. One of the caves is filled with hundreds of statues of the Buddha which can be seen through a rugged hole in the cliff face.
If you want to see this amazing scene up close then it is possible to climb out onto the dock where the beautifully carved stones will lead you up to the entrance of the cave. There are  Buddha statues absolutely everywhere that you look, balancing on stone shelves, lining the stairs and in the nooks and crannies in the cave.

For at least the last 500 years, pilgrims and kings have gone to the caves to worship.
Pha That Luang is a Buddhist temple in Vientiane, Laos which was built in the 16th century. The temple was destroyed by a Thai invasion but has since been restored to its former glory. There are some people that believe that relics of the Buddha are housed in this temple. Due to the architecture including the Lao people’s culture and identity, this temple has become a symbol of Lao nationalism.

There is a wonderfully unique place known as the Plain Of Jars, located in the remote north east of Laos, where you will find hundreds of huge stone urns. These stone jars cover an area of several square miles and have become a great crowd puller. In Asia, the urns are one of the most enigmatic ancient sights. To this day the many jars have kept their secret from the many historians who have tried to date them and discover what they actually signify.

Presenting a unique collection of authentic artifacts, yantras, mandalas, buddha pendants, spiritual devotional designs and holy images sourced from ancient Rishis, Buddhist malas, enlightened minds, realised adepts who have attained the way, and those of profound ethereal insight whose minds have created symbols of great yogic and psychological understanding by their transfer of their spiritual virtues and energies as followers of the path. Divine Sanskrit and Buddhist Pali script, ancient symbols of peace, harmony and tranquility, and patterns of nature of archetypical significance are transmitted with spiritual power and the pure radiance of heaven. Holy images are created with power and energy having undergone a ‘life-giving process’ that animates and transmits life, efficacy and supernatural qualities. The magnificent images have special miraculous powers, auspicious energy and protective virtue, providing refuge. The yantras and mandalas are the abstract mathematical representation of the inner vision.Just as all forms of creation or matter are othing but energy, so a yantra also contains inherent energy which is a powerhouse of energy, and by visualisation and concentration on a yantra, one can induce the awakening of the equivalent energy within. And so it is with the statues and designs of divinity, amulets, which will effect one’s subconscious mind, helping to reduce suffering and disease, eliminate the negative states of mind and induce the desired result of peace of mind, serenity, empowerment, harmony and tranquility. In the stillness of presence one can sense the formless essence inside oneself, a state of inner spaciousness, the unconditioned, blissful and eternal joy of being.

Popularly referred to as the most famous pagoda in Burma; the Shwedagon Pagoda is a 98 meter high gilded stupa in Yangon, the origins of the Shewedagon Pagoda are lost in the sands of history. It is also the most sacred of all Buddhist monuments in Burma with relics from four Buddhas being enshrined within its structure. Namely the hairs of the Gautama Buddha, the water filter of the Konagamana Buddha and the staff of the Kakusandha Buddha, the robe of the Kassapa Buddha.buddha pendant

Thought definite records of its age are not available, and historians say that it is likely that the Shewedagon Pagoda was built between the 6th and 10th centuries by the Mon ethnic group, according to legend the stupa is over 2,500 years old. This is however a very controversial argument as many Buddhist monks believe that the pagoda was built before the Buddha died.

According to legend the story of the Shewedagon Pagoda is as follows; two merchant brothers known as Thapassu and Bhalluka hailing from the land of Ramanya near the modern day Thai-Burmese border had received eight hairs from the Buddha to be enshrined in a Pagoda to be built in Burma.

The design of the Shewedagon Pagoda has given it four separate entrances, religious books, candles, incense sticks and Buddha images, the eastern and southern gates have vendors who sell good luck charms,. Pair of mythical lion figures guards all four entrances. The base of the stupa is built with brick covered with gold plates; above the base is a terrace which only the monks are allowed to access. Above that is the bell-shaped body of the pagoda topped off with an inverted alms bowl combined with lotus petals, the very top has a 76-carat diamond that is surrounded by 5,000 smaller diamonds and 2,000 rubies.

Located close to many a Yangon hotel, the Shewedagon Pagoda is a must-see attraction in Burma. A hotel in Yangon close to the city’s cultural highlights as well as offering great transportation links is the best choice for tourists.
