Do you have to travel by air in the near future with your pet?
Pet owners who are trying to travel with their pet face an interesting time when it pertains to air travel. Most people to tend to leave their pets at home when they travel, however, that is not always the case – especially when your purpose for travel is to move house permanently.
Regardless of your reasons for needing to travel with your pets, there are a number of important issues that you will need to keep in mind when doing so.
The first thing to consider when it comes to travelling with a pet is to make sure that you can do so. Although a good number of airlines will allow pets on their planes, it is not always the case. It is a good idea to check beforehand from the airlines’ website or over the phone that they accept pets to fly especially if you plan to depart from a small airport with only one or two airlines.
If they do not accept pets or if their rules and restrictions do not suit you, your only alternative would be to examine larger nearby airports.
Most airlines will charge you an additional fee for carrying your pets. Unfortunately, many first time pet travellers believe that they can use their pets and their pet carriers to count as carry-on or checked baggage. This is not how it works though.
Most of the time the airline will charge you an extra fee for bringing on board a pet. This extra fee will likely depend on the airline in question as is your pet’s location during the journey such as in the baggage compartment or the cabin.
Do not assume that all airlines allow pets to travel in the cabin with other passengers.
This is a policy that is due in part to consideration to other passengers – particularly common on small planes where allergies may be a big concern. If you cannot part with your pet, be sure to search for an airline that allows animals to travel in the cabin. The size of your pet could also play a part here.
