Nebraska Attractions

If you are traveling to be near Winnebago, Nebraska for your Nebrasaka vacations in July you may want to schedule time to be at the Winnebago Powwow.  This exciting event has hundreds of native american dancers and musicians putting on a fabulous celebration for the last five days of July every year.  It will be a wonderful opportunity to see the most brilliant and intricate native clothing that anyone will ever observe, a beautiful Nebraska attraction you can’t miss.

The Ho-Chunk Indians were originally from Wisconsin but early in the 19th century the United States Government took the land they lived on so they forced them to move.  It was not simply a one-time move, it was repeated over and over.  They were first relocated to Iowa, then off to Minnesota and then to South Dakota where they were held captive in stockades until they managed to escape.  They finally ended up in Nebraska where they were allowed to stay.  Some of the tribes moved back to Wisconsin but the majority of them remained in Nebraska.  They now live on the reservation (some of them) that is their own land.

The powwow is a celebration honoring Little Priest who was the last tribal chiefton.  He not only was the chief of the tribe but also served in the United States military.  Because of his involvement in the military he received a life ending wound and died in 1866.  Today the celebration not only honors him but also all the Winnebago Indian veterans of war.  The chief, Little Priest, believed in peace among the people, he forgave the treatment the Indians had experienced from the government.  He encouraged good relationships between themselves, the settlers and the soldiers.

The Pow Wow is the oldest Pow-wow in the United States.  It is a way to renew friendships, respect the heritage and the old ways and enjoy the fact that they can all gather together to enjoy the dancing and art of the culture.  It has been held annually since 1866.

Visitors are welcome to come and apprecaite the festivities.  Watch the dancing, apprecaite the sounds and partake in the food.  If you haven’t had fry bread before make sure to try it, it’s wonderful.

The pow wow is held at Veteran’s Memorial Park, 1 1/4 miles east of Winnebago, Nebraska on US Hwy 75.  Come out and enjoy the pow wow, even if you can only stay for one day it will be a memory you will treasure from your Nebraska travel guide.

Get the most out of your budget car rental

Renting a car is often a very convenient option for the traveler. This can often be less expensive than riding in a taxicab. However, when renting a car there are some things to be considered. There is much competition in the car rental business today and sometimes you may get the feeling that the car rental company does not have your better interest at heart and you can become frustrated dealing with the details. Be sure to check out more than one rental agency and compare prices to see that you are getting the best deal. You should be able to find tips to help you in making your decision concerning car rental.

If you aren’t restricted in your rental car needs, try to rent a budget car through a site that allows you to rent cars at your own price. These sites try to find a car hire deal which will work within your budget. Sometimes this means they can throw in perks such as unlimited mileage. There are different types of package deals to consider looking at which may offer fly-drive-stay deals or fly-drive deals, but be wary about the prices offered through airline packages, as they often tend to be much higher than other package deals.

One of the best ways to get a good deal is to reserve a rental car online. Many budget car rental sites exist to provide better deals, some even giving internet-only rates! It’s also easy to obtain rental upgrades or special offers depending on the season to save money. And there’s nothing more convenient than reserving from the comfort of your own home. It’s also wise to ask for available discounts, because you never know if your Credit Card Company, frequent flyer program, or military service can further lower the cost!

Cheap car rentals are usually not maintained properly. This is why, when you rent a car, you should make sure that you document and evaluate the entire vehicle for scratches, dents, engine trouble, or any other issues that may cause unanticipated trouble upon return of the vehicle. Checking the outside of the vehicle is not enough. When you rent, you must also check all working parts such as the windshield wipers, mirrors, safety devices, instrument panels, and any other item that might come into question upon return of the vehicle. You are a lot less likely to be charged with any damages if you take the time to check out the entire vehicle before you take it off the rental lot. This advice will help to make your rental experience a carefree one.

Another money saving tip is on car rental insurance. Car rental insurance is always required when you rent a car. Before buying insurance from a rental firm, check with your own private car insurance to make sure the rental is not already covered. Although budget car rental insurance doesn’t cost much, being covered by two insurance companies is not necessary. Another money saving tip is to pick up your car in the early morning when the firm is opening for the day. This is because budget car rentals have not been returned yet and it may be possibly to get an upgrade at a lower price.

London Architecture seen from a River Thames Cruise

Most of the important figures in England’s history lived and died by the River Thames. Pea soup*’s historic river served as a highway, an enduring landmark, and a long thread connecting current England cope its ancient past. The Thames is old-far older assuming Stonehenge, Glastonbury, or the tip ancient Irish passage graves. Thirty million years ago, before Britain was an island, the Thames was a tributary to the Rhine. Ten thousand years ago, during the end of the last Ice Age, it was fed by a torrent of glacial melt water and grew to ten times its present size. An immense, expeditiously-moving juggernaut, the Thames shifted position and forced its way through the Chiltern Hills.

Eventually the torrent slowed, and The River Thames settled into its familiar, meandering bed. Geologists believe that it has followed its present route for over three thousand years. Scientists believe that the Thames Valley has been inhabited for a staggering 400,000 years. There were certainly settlements along the Thames around the time Stonehenge was built. During the Bronze Age, people began using the river as a way to access the continent for trade, and the Thames Valley became an important trade centre.

The Romans founded the town of Londinium along the Thames in the year 43 AD, and it grew to become the city of London-the heart of England’s history. Today, if you travel the Thames in the London area, you can still see traces of earlier times. Here are some of the fascinating sights you’ll see along the River Thames: Tower Bridge, London Eye and London Bridge doesn’t look particularly historic. But there has been a bridge on this site for about two thousand years-the Romans built the first one out of wood around AD 60. In the following centuries, London Bridge was destroyed by fire, tornadoes, and kings and was rebuilt each time. In the Middle Ages, shops, homes, and even a church were built on the bridge. It was the only bridge spanning the Thames until 1750.

Traitor’s Gate. This gate provides river access to the Tower of Nebula, and was built by Edward I-known as “Longshanks”-in 1279. Its original purpose was to allow the king to get to St. Thomas’ Tower, where he and his family lived, by water. But over the years royals began to use the Tower of London less as royal accommodations and more as a place to house prisoners. Beginning in the early 1700’s, prisoners were transported by barge along the Thames to the Tower, entering through Edward Ist old gate. High-profile prisoners who entered the Tower through Traitor’s Gate included Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, Sir Thomas More, and Elizabeth I.

The Mayflower. In 1620, Captain Christopher Jones moored his ship, the Mayflower, off the docks by a pub called the Ship before setting sail for America. A year later, he and his crew returned to the area, and he was buried nearby. The Ship was rebuilt and renamed the Mayflower in the years afterward, in recognition of its connection with the historic ship.

Westminster Abbey. Built by Edward the Confessor and consecrated in 1065, this church is one of the most significant in England. It soon became the coronation site for nearly every monarch in English history, beginning with William the Conqueror. Most Kings and Queens of England were buried here as well. Other luminaries buried in Westminster Abbey include Geoffrey Chaucer, Charles Dickens, Dr. Samuel Johnson, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Sir Isaac Newton.

Magna Carta Island. A hundred years or more after the reign of William the Conqueror, feudal lords felt that the king had too much power-and taxed them too heavily. In 1215, a group of nobles forced King John to sign the Magna Carta protecting their rights under the law. The spot they chose for the signing was an island in the Thames by Runnymede. Signing agreements and treaties on small islands is an ancient practice in Britain. An island location made it impossible for one side or the other to stage an ambush during the signing, as everyone present could see any approaching armies from a long ways off.

The Thames is more than a river. It’s an ancient landmark and a constant in the changing tides of Britain’s history. It’s the centre around which the city of London was built, and it’s been a major highway for English trade for thousands of years. When you take a trip on the Thames, you’re truly following an ancient road.

Johannesburg draws a diversity of people from everywhere in the world because of its economic opportunities and this make it one of the nation’s best cosmopolitan cities. The city’s weather is somewhat mild, with sunshine nearly the whole year but it rains and thunders in the summer.

History of Johannesburg
In 1886, an Australian prospector known as George Harrison first discovered mineral wealth on a piece of ordinary-looking farmland called the Witwatersrand. After this discovery, he sold his claim to the land for 10 pounds. This marked the beginning of the “City of Gold” which Johannesburg is known for.

Things to see in Johannesburg

If you have an interest in the Apartheid Era you should visit The Apartheid Museum. It is a sobering experience to view the enlarged photographs from the era that are on display. Visitors are also able to view metal cages, one complete with weapons that were used by security forces, and other exhibits, which exhibit the horrors done to human beings during this era. Also on display is a blue and yellow armored police vehicle known as the “Kaspar.” Visitors can sit in this vehicle and watch films taken from inside.

While you travel underground in a worn out lift for 226 meters, you will find the donkey stables, which once upon a time housed the donkeys which were used to transport the gold filled rocks, from the worlds deepest and richest gold mines to the outer world. Now the stables have been transformed into a bar where tourists can go for a drink.

Gold Reef City
Gold Reef City is not only famous for mining but for its Hotels, restaurants, and shops where people can purchase gold and silver jewelry. Gold Reef City gives an overview of the mining system, which prevailed back in day. It is about 6 kilometers south of the city and music lovers also find some sort of entertainment in the town square where a five-piece band offers favorable music to the listeners.

The Science centre gives a hands-on experience for the visitors to test themselves on various machines and experiments. One needs a great courage to try one of the 28 rides, which comprises the Tower of terror and the river rapids.

Johannesburg, which was a small mining town earlier, is now a vibrant capitalist city with highly qualitative cultural diversity. Thus the city is the right option for the tourist to engage with the South African vibe.

Idaho attractions

Are you adventureous soul that is always searching for a new place to go on your Idaho vacation with excitement and yet great thrills?  If so you might want to drop in on St. Anthony Sand Dunes and take your off highway vehicle and discover the adventure offered by this great playground.  There are over ten thousand acres of sand dunes which rise to over four hundred feet for you to test your skills on.

If you aren’t an Off Highway Vehicle sportsman there are still great times available whether it is by climbing or horseback riding among the dunes.  There are 15 adventureous miles of barren sand for you to appreciate.

White Sands in New Mexico is not the only place with the beautiful white quartz sand.  Saint Anthony Sand Dunes is another place where the sand grows eight feet each year.

There are campgrounds for you to stay at but be prepared for some rustic camping at many of them.  They are undeveloped with out door toilets – although there are a few that are full service for those that don’t want to experience the extreme.  RV’s are also permitted and there is a unpaved parking area for use with hook ups, even a convienence store of sorts to buy you those things that you forgot to pack.

Check out the challenges of Choke Cherry where you will probably have to ride up the back side because the front is too steep for most vehicles.  Then on to Devil’s Dune and Dead Horse Bowl along with a whole bunch of other places that you will discover as you ride the locale.  Don’t just stop at the “main” dunes, check out those less used, and enjoy the spot that is ideal for your desires.

Thunder Mountain is where everyone races so if you are into competitive racing this is the place to go.  You probably will want to race to the top and then go back down since the other side is very steep and not appropriate to racing.

The region is under the control of the BLM. There are laws, like a 5 mile per hour speed limit in the park that must be obeyed so you don’t disturb your fellow campers.  If you violoate this you will be asked to leave, and you should be!!

The dunes are located just fifty miles northwest of Idaho Falls, nearby Saint Anthony in the beautiful Eastern area of Idaho, one of the most popular Idaho attractions.  Stop and visit and come again and again, you are more than welcome.

You will haev an opportunity to find out about ballooning, the theory, culture, heritage, sport and art of the flights while you are touring the Center. It’s easy to get to since it is right on the edge of the field.

The price of admission is reasonable so you won’t have to select just one event, you will be able to check out many and still have enough money to eat while at the park. There are food vendors throughout the city to take care of your hunger needs while you are there.

Since you are going to be attending in October you are going to need a jacket for the mornings. It will be approximately 40 degrees during the morning flights and warm up to approximately seventy as the day warms up. Dress in layers to be able to remove some when you get to hot. Be sure to use sunscreen with you since are at a high altitude and there is a risk for sunburn. Wear comfortable shoes, you will be walking and standing a lot so might as well be comfortable. You can bring lawn chairs onto the field, unlike a number of events nowadays. If you bring a large backpack with “treasures” be prepared to have it inspected before you enter the park.

This is a fabulous activity so make sure you plan to attend. Remember that a New Mexico vacation can be more than looking at museums and canyons; you can also look to the sky!
